Description

The purpose of this course is to distinguish the different heat transfer phenomena and be able to design heat exchangers. The different heat transfer phenomena will first be presented (conduction, convection, and radiation) with different related laws (Fourier, Newton, Stefan-Boltzmann...). Once these acquired notions, heat balances will be detailed in various systems and especially apply to plain and cylindrical wall including cylindrical walls. The project following the theoretical teaching aims to link the different knowledge related with chemical engineering acquired during their first years in UFAZ and to become familiar with industrial problematic. In fact, each project deals with an industrial chemical process ammonia production or power to gas for instance) and involves mass balance, heat transfer, fluid mechanics as well as thermodynamic.

Compétences requises

Thermodynamics, Fluid mechanics.

Compétences visées

As temperature is a key parameter in chemical process, heat transfers require a specific attention. The knowledge on the different heat transport phenomena and the application of the different laws is crucial to design chemical process elements such as heat exchangers, reactor or industrial oven.... A project involving personal work in group will allow to apply all the notions dealing with chemical process acquired since S1 : thermodynamic, fluid mechanistic, mass and heat balance. This project will consist in the basic design of a chemical plant.
