Kinetics and Thermodynamics
Master ChimieParcours Physical and analytical chemistry (UFAZ)
Description
- Thermodynamics of mixtures, chemical equilibria. Application to real solutions (activity coefficients), and influence of temperature. Application to interface and surface phenomena (adsorption at the aqueous solution/solid interface, surface energy).
- Kinetics: Experimental determination of a speed law, complex reaction mechanisms, activation energy and activated complex theory.
- Thermodynamic and/or kinetic control of a reaction (influence of temperature)
Compétences visées
The objective of the course is to approach the relations between thermodynamics and kinetics through the study of real mixtures.
The students will learn how to characterize a chemical system and propose coherent mechanisms from experimental studies of thermodynamics (determination of equilibrium constants) and kinetics.
The students will also be able to identify the parameters that control the system under study, see the limitations of thermodynamic studies and the necessary complementarity with kinetic studies.
