Description

Starting from a real industrial case study, the students are asked to reproduce, unit by unit, the process digital twin by means of a process simulators amongst the most established ones in both research and industrial domain.
For each process unit, the students need to exploit the knowledge and the skills acquired in the previous classes and, with the help of the professor, they will analyze all the critical aspects of the system from the physicochemical and the energetic point of view.
Once the simulation is completed, the final step of course is to develop a critical and systematic view of the entire process section in order to better understand and synthesize the interactions between all the units that are studied with a standalone approach during the previous Chemical Engineering program courses.

Compétences requises

- Equilibrium thermodynamics ;

- Chemical reaction engineering fundamentals ;

- Fluid mechanics fundamentals ;

- Heat transfer ;

- Unit operations design (mixer, flash, distillation) ;

- Computer science fundamentals (manage the use of a software).

Compétences visées

- Being able to understand a process flowsheet and to divide it into a series of unit operations ;

- Acquire confidence in using the interface of a simulation software and being able to explore and find the desired functions amongst all the available ones ;

- Being able to reproduce a process digital twin with a good degree of detail and accuracy ;

- Being able to identify the possible causes of eventual errors in the simulated system and to adjust the parameters in order to debug them.
