Description

Flow through particle layers or packed beds is widely used in process engineering. Liquids and gases flow through packed beds and fluidized beds in reactors. Another area of application is the separation of solids from suspensions by cake filtration and depth filtration. The experimental setups used in this teaching allow measuring the pressure drop linked to a particle layer and the influence of experimental parameters. The bowl dryer experimental setup can be used to clearly represent and analyse the process of convection drying. It consists of a flow channel with transparent section where the sand to be dried can be observed during the experiment. The drying air is fed into the flow channel by means of a fan and is passed over the material to be dried. The air can be heated beforehand using a heater. The quantitative evaluation is performed using a mobile combined temperature/moisture sensor and a manual anemometer for air flow measurements. In fluidised beds, granular solid matter is held in suspension by a fluid flowing through it. As a result the solid matter behaves like a boiling liquid. With the experimental setup used, investigations can be performed on solid and fluidised masses of fine granular solid matter. In particular, the conditions that lead to a fluidised bed can be investigated. Filtration is the separation of solid particles suspended in a liquid or in a gas. The experimental unit used has a complete frame filter press allowing to treat different examples of filtration procedure. A suspension is created in a suspension tank. This suspension is then forced through the frame filter press using an immersion pump and thus filtered.
