Mastering the thermodynamics and topology of self-organizing processes of molecules and macromolecules, surface and colloid chemistry. (8h Lecture +4h Tutorial)
- Definition of self organization and autopoeisis.
- First and second principles of thermodynamics and self-assembly processes.
- Topological approach of self-assembly in 3D, Euler’s equation, polyhedra : applications to fullerenes, molecular polyhedra and microporous solids.
- Self-assembly in 2D : thermodynamics, role of molecular geometry and chirality, role of the substrate.
- Self-assembly in biology : topological approach to micelles formation, role of size and shape, universal phase diagram, minimal periodic surfaces
- Application to cellular processes. Self-assembly processes in block polymers chemistry.
Compétences à acquérir
Good understanding of what is energy and entropy at a molecular scale. Basic topological principles for understanding shapes and phase transitions in chemistry and biology.
